Chapter Nine

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

The sound of water awakens me from my aching slumber, filled with nightmares and pain. I groan, my entire body bleating in agony the moment I blink my eyes open. My uncle had beaten me half to death out there in that clearing, my half-baked magic and strength being no match for him. Not when he’s been consuming my magical blood for over a decade. It’s what’s making him so powerful, it has to be. I’ve never heard of a single vampire overwhelming a group of shifters. They have covens for a reason.

I glance around the familiar cell, eyes collecting as much information as possible. There’s no one else here despite my hazy memories of Maven trying to protect me, and my uncle’s threats of holding my alpha’s captive. I’m hanging limply by silver chains, as I always have, alone. It sends such a sick feeling of dread through my chest that I wretch uncontrollably, body shaking as I heave out nothing but bile and spit. I’ve been unconscious for days, there’s nothing in my stomach to throw up.

“Oh, you’re finally awakened, my love,” my uncle drawls, pulling my attention to where he stands, completely healed and unscathed, outside my cell.

I bare my teeth at him. “Fuck you, uncle!”

He laughs. “Oh, stop calling me that already. We’re not related in the slightest. Well, unless you count me exclusively drinking your blood since I captured you. I’m made of you now. Call me Kalon.”

The way he purred the word made me shiver in disgust, the innuendo clear enough for me to blush. Whatever crazy thoughts are rushing through his head right now must be truly horrid for him to be staring at me hungrily like that, licking his lips. I’m sure it’s not for my body, though. No, he’s imagining drinking my magical blood. That’s what excites him, not me. Otherwise he would have taken my body along with my blood long ago, right? Kalon steps forward, unlocking the door to my cell as I buck wildly against the silver chains, flinching at the familiar smell and feel of my own burning flesh. Panic floods my chest the closer he becomes, until I’m shivering with it, my breathing coming faster and faster as his talon grazes my chest.

“Get away from me!” I wail, voice quaking.

He huffs, unimpressed. “Don’t start crying now. Where’d all that new fire go? I miss it already.”

The urge to spit in his face rises. But I’ve done that before and it ended with a broken jaw. I cringe away from him instead, pushing my body as far into the wall as possible. He follows my movement, keeping as close as possible without actually touching me yet. Somehow that makes it more unbearable, the possibility of his touch. Of the pain that comes with it. For the month I’ve been gone, it got easier and easier to push aside thoughts of him, of his anger and power over me. But here, right now, it all comes flooding back as if it had never left.
